Point to Point File Sharing for Lay People
Citizens in some affluent countries take perfectly good working items like washing machines, dryers or televisions and set them on the curb or sidewalk in front of their houses with a sign “FREE” on it so that anybody wanting an item like that can pick it up at no charge... Now there is no problem with sharing your stuff with less fortunate ones... Some of the more business oriented less fortunate people have gone around and collected such items and have taken these things to flea markets and made money reselling them, and there is no problem with that either as long as they pay their taxes on their incomes.
Point to Point (P2P) file sharing networks work the same way, people who have stuff for free can put those items in an area where other people who are looking for free stuff can find them and download them. It is the responsibility of the person sharing or making stuff available for free to make sure that it is his stuff that he is sharing. People finding free stuff ought not be blamed for downloading and hoarding free stuff found on the Internet. What would you blame a person with who is picking up your refrigerator from the front of your house that has a “FREE” sign on it? So people downloading stuff from the Internet is the same thing. It is a normal thing which does not break any laws, nor is hoarding items found on the Internet a crime! While I personally do not agree with profiteering on free stuff found on the Internet, the law should not punish even these people who resell free stuff found on the Internet, as long as they pay their tax on the profits.
Musicians want t be heard widely, photographers and painters want to be seen widely, they live for the recognition, the art and the money that is made on their work. Too often business middle man and woman keep most of the money spent on such works by the public and not enough goes to the original artists anyway...
Why not just fire all those middle men and women who come between the artists and the public and directly compensate artists whose work you like and use by your direct donations, send them a few dollars if you like their stuff! Since that is all that they get anyway from your $16.00 CD purchase at the store... $16.00 could compensate 8 artists directly, buy you 8 CD of music... Now that is efficient! Like P2P network technologies!
